Husky safaries overview

Husky safaris on Kola Peninsula

Husky safaris on the Kola Peninsula, from one-day safaris in Murmansk and Lovozero area to multi-day husky expeditions on "Top of the Earth".

Do you know that the First Siberian Husky was raised by Chukchi in North-East Siberia. The dogs lived inside of Chukchi’s dwellings that is why they are very kind to people and love children. Siberian Huskies history is inseparably linked with the endless snow carpets, where the long winters and storms forced people to look for not just a friend, but a true friend and helper. And the Huskies did are and remain so. Huskies are fond of sledge pulling. These dogs are enjoying with “flying” over the snow surrounded by Snow World of Arctic Winter!

It is really pleasure to communicate with such lovely, fluffy and friendly husky doggies.

More about husky safaris:

Dressing and instructions: Dressing and instructions: Husky safaris are in the open Arctic air. Temperatures are in average -15 degrees Celsius, but it can go up and down depending on the season. For the Northern activities we advise to wear a multiple layer clothing system, like thermal underwear, sweaters, a windproof pair of trousers, windproof jacket, mittens, warm hat and warm shoes. At the husky farms warm clothes are also offered (hat, gloves, overall and warm boots) and you are free to use them. The participants go outside and to the kennels after dressing. The husky guide/instructor explains the principles about how to handle a sledge and husky team. The guide also prepares the sledge with the selected huskies. Each sledge team has a leader dog in front. While preparing the sledge the dogs can bark and howl. That is the normal procedure. The leader dogs know their guide very well and the commands for stopping, starting, going left and right. All dogs are well trained and love to run. Every sledge has a brake to slowdown the enthusiastic dogs and an anchor to secure the sledge when a (longer) break is planned.

After dressing and instructions the husky safari starts. The husky dogs are running on groomed tracks. Each husky sledge team should keep distance from the one in front. The husky guide/instructor stops many times for changing the musher for the passenger. The participants can make photographs

Basic rules of mushing:

  • Ruling a sledge under 16 years old is not recommended.
  • The distance between each husky sledge team should be minimal 15 meters.
  • The musher has to stand on the brake all the time during the stops.
  • Overtaking other husky teams or sliding off-track is not allowed.
  • The passenger in the sledge needs to keep arms and legs inside the sledge.
  • Driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol is prohibited.
