The World-class Umba Lodge

This very comfortable lodge was built by local craftsmen using locally-grown timber. The round central building has a jointed dining and sitting room which is connected to the bedroom accommodation. Ten bedrooms have two single beds each with their own hot water shower and toilet. The dining room has a large open fireplace, comfortable sofas, a well stocked bar, fly tying corner and much more! Close to the waterside you can enjoy the best sauna of Umba area. Located on the shore of the river, the lodge gives more possibilities to fish after regular fishing hours. The boat traffic is directed up stream from the Pig Island ensuring that the best fishing places in the Home Pool are not disturbed.

Supplies in the Umba Lodge: In the Lodge we have extra fishing equipment such as rods, reels, lines to rent, or to buy. We also have a selection of the best Umba flies, souvenirs and various tackles, like leaders, waders, wading staffs, jackets, T-shirts, caps, Russian made wooden fly boxes etc.

Fishing season on the Umba river

June: Fishing is usually good in the lower reaches of the river. The Umba river is in this month very productive. The large fall salmon, so unique for the Umba area, wakes up from the winter "hibernation" and starts to join the fresh run salmon on their way towards the spawning grounds. Not to be confused with Kelts (black-salmon) this magnificent deep and strong-fighting salmon is still in its silvery livery. The most of fishing is done by casting from boats, but the Brad Pool and the Home Pool area offer fantastic fishing from the banks.

July / August :During these warm months, the river is usually closed to Atlantic salmon fishing.

September / October: The late season on the Umba river is the time when the biggest salmon migrates to upper reaches of the river. This unique run of late salmon is extremely deep and powerful created by spending a full year in the river before the next year spawning. From the lodge you can see new fish coming into the Home Pool every day, jumping to challenge your flies. At the time one normally is fishing with sinking lines and big flies, we are doing better with small flies and slow intermediate or even floating lines. Although the days are shorter and the weather is more severe, the late season on the Umba is unparalleled. By our knowledge, no other river on the Kola Peninsula can compete for the same numbers of truly big salmon as the Umba river in September and October.
