Arkhangelsk was founded in 1584. It is the base for about 390 thousand inhabitants who make their living from timber trade and paper industry. Arkhangelsk city has a large commercial and fishing port.

Just outside Arkhangelsk you can find a unique open Air Museum - Malye Korely - which presents the collection of local wooden architecture. The area of 140 hectares allows the Museum to arrange its architectural and landscape exhibition: more than 100 monuments of the 16th-19th centuries are situated there. Peculiarities of history and ethnography, original culture and traditions of the Pomor people of the Russian North are reflected in the unique cult constructions (churches, bell-towers, chapels), in different types of Northern Russian peasants' dwellings, in household constructions and seasonal settlements.
